Description

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this classic 1957 Jazz album. This is nearly the only existing collaboration between Art Tatum and Ben Webster. This was to be Tatum''s last visit to a recording studio, for he died less than two months after these tracks were recorded. A complete quartet session by Webster with another celebrated pianist, Teddy Wilson, and a beautiful Tatum solo piano rendering of ''All the Things You Are'' have been added as a bonus. Phoenix.

A real surprise based on my experience of Amazon’s handling of vinyl. The album arrived packaged in a vinyl shipping container. This is not always the case with Amazon.
The vinyl itself is almost pristine... no clicks and pops. A quiet, silent background. The music does sound compressed, a production issue. While the album is touted as remastered, my suspicion is that it is remastered from a digital source, not the original analog masters.
The music is sublime. Relaxed, unforced, flowing... quite remarkable and singular in these regards. The interaction between the musicians is one of the reasons many listen to jazz. An almost telepathic quality, especially between Webster and Tatum. As Tatum mostly recorded solo, these cuts are precious.
Even with the production caveat, highly recommended.

Tatum is a massive talent, and could supposedly play even an out-of-tune piano well after he had memorized the tones. His technique and speed and aesthetic choices are beyond reproach. But he was not known for being a team player, and he certainly is no accompanist. Many of the people he chose to record with find difficulty finding their "space". Ben however - with his provocative breathiness, feel for melody, and sheer warmth forges an emotive territory within the cascade. When I first heard this recording, I was thrilled by Tatum, but when Webster came in, I fell in love with the possibilities of jazz. Tatum has verve and color galore, but it is in Webster I first uncovered the most human side of the musical genre, that opened up the rest of its spectrum. One of my favorite records in any field of music..

This music was the background music to one of Woody Allen''s little movies with Mia Farrow, which is how I first encountered it. It is truly lovely and it is also the only time that the two got together to record.

Many consider Art Tatum a jazz master. I am not one of those people. I find his playing wooden and without feeling. There''s no doubt he has the technique to play anything he wants but his playing is flowery and show-off like.
On the other hand, there is Ben Webster. One of the greats. His unforgettable sound, the effortless power he exudes, his fame and popularity were simply meant to be. His playing here is sublime.
Unfortunately all ruined by Tatum. I''ve read Webster was a big Tatum fan. To me they clash like oil and water. Webster is perfection and grace, saying so much with just a few notes. Tatum is all over the place- he just won''t SHUT UP. Besides taking long long intros to each cut, once Webster starts blowing it''s almost like Tatum can''t stand to share the spotlight. It''s like he saying "no no listen to ME."
HOWEVER at the end of this disc are four cuts with Webster and Teddy Wilson. Wilson''s style is similiar to Tatum''s I think but when Webster plays Wilson stays where an accompanist should- simply and quietly supporting, like Oscar Peterson would. These 4 cuts are worth buying the albums for- and Webster''s horn is recorded right in your face like the "meets oscar peterson" disc.

I had two of the tracks years ago on an EP. A lot of jazz enthusiasts have criticised the way in which Art Tatum plays - too many notes - particularly when he''s supposed to be accompanying someone else''s solo, even, I believe, the artists themselves. It says in the sleeve notes that Tatum''s response was ''Just get on and play!'' Yes, he does play a lot of notes, but they''re the right notes, and the whole collection flows beautifully, as you would expect from accomplished jazz stars like Tatum and Webster and their rhythm section.

This CD has probably given me more pleasure than any other CD that I have purchased in the last few years. All the songs were great and although the two soloist never strayed far from the melody it still sounded like great jazz.
